David Babister Takes on a 192-Mile Coast to Coast Challenge for Two Important Causes

Some challenges are about fitness. Others are about purpose.

At Mushy Media, we love sharing stories about local people doing meaningful things. David Babister of Espresso Architecture is exactly that kind of person. Based locally and well known through Bicester, Buckingham and Milton Keynes, David is preparing to take on an extraordinary challenge to raise money for Cancer Research UK and Dorothy House Hospice.

This April, David and his friend Chris will walk the famous Wainwright Coast to Coast route, covering 192 miles in 10 days from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay. The route crosses three national parks, and they are making it even tougher by camping along the way and carrying their kit on their backs. Most people take around 14 to 17 days, so completing it in 10 is a serious test of endurance.
This challenge is not just about distance. It is about raising money for two charities that matter deeply to David and Chris. David shared that both of them have lost friends and family members to cancer, and that Dorothy House Hospice cared for his brother-in-law before he passed away in January. That personal connection is what gives this challenge its heart.

David is no stranger to endurance events. In 2022, he completed the Lakes Traverse, which covers the first third of the Coast to Coast route. That experience stayed with him, partly because of the challenge itself, and partly because of how beautiful the trail was. It made him want to come back and complete the full route properly.

Training for this has meant fitting long walks, runs and bike rides around work and family life. David has also been rebuilding strength after knee surgery in December 2024, which makes the challenge even more impressive. One of the hardest parts, he said, has been getting used to the weight of the backpack, with camping gear, clothing, food and equipment all adding up to more than 12 kilos.

That is what stands out about this story. It is not only ambitious. It is personal, disciplined and deeply genuine.

A local story worth supporting

For us, this is also what makes David’s challenge such a strong story. He is a business owner, part of the wider community, and someone using his time and energy to do something positive for others. Through his networking groups, local business contacts and sponsors, there is already a strong sense of community building around the challenge.

That is something Bicester and the surrounding area do well. When good people take on something worthwhile, others get behind them.
David and Chris are aiming to raise money for both charities through a fundraising page that splits donations directly between Cancer Research UK and Dorothy House Hospice. At the time of the interview, they had already raised around £1,300 and were working towards a £2,500 target, with hopes of going even further.

That means there is still a real opportunity for people to get behind this challenge and make a difference.

Whether you know David personally, know Espresso Architecture through the local business community, or have simply been affected by cancer in some way, this is the kind of cause that deserves support.

And support does not only have to mean donating.

David also encouraged people to follow and share the journey on social media, including the Wainwright Wild Wander Facebook page and LinkedIn updates. Every share helps more people hear about the challenge, the charities, and the reason behind it.

A journey worth backing

A challenge like this takes grit, preparation and purpose. But when it is driven by something bigger than the finish line, it means even more.

David Babister’s 192-mile Coast to Coast walk is not just an endurance challenge. It is a fundraising effort rooted in real experience, personal loss, and the desire to do something good with that experience.

From all of us at Mushy Media, we would love to see the local community get behind him.

Support the cause if you can. Share the story. Follow the journey. And help turn every mile into something meaningful.
